Today, Yazid, Aleng and I went to the only pay pond in Sandakan to target silver catfish. We fish around 8.30 to 1.00 pm and these are the catch. Our reels screaming out line as these fishes hooked. Every body managed to hook up at least one fish. Yazid is the champion of the day - he caught 2!!. We stop fishing after Yazid caught the forth fish and before the pond owner ban us from fishing hehe.

Fly Fishing One Step From Home

For the past few days I have been planning to go to Berhala Island but the weather is not on my side. Its been raining heavily last night and for sure there will be no fishing today. All I can do today is fly tying.... Luckily I found a new fly fishing spot just one step from home :-)

Fishing with a newbie - my wife

It's sunday and I did not have any plan for today so I tied some flies just to fill my flybox. After finished tying I was thinking I would be nice to fish today but still some hesitation wheather to go or not to go because I felt like to stay home. I phoned Bakry but he was busy preparing for his presentation tomorrow. I thought it would be better if I stayed at home and rest and about 2 pm my wife said that if I want to go fishing today she would like to go. To my surprise.. this is the first time she want to go fishing. Immediately I load up my car trunk with fishing gear and off we went. So these are the pictures :

Snakehead on fly

Rainy season always limit fishing activities to all anglers. As for me, if I can't fish I usually tie some flies. Few days ago I tied several woolly buggers to be used in Jalil Alip's paypond, targetting snakeheads, tilapias and hopefully 'Patin'.The paypond is actually not really maintained regularly by the owner, no fish restocking but the fee is Rm 10 for fishing the whole day, nobody would complain.
Yesterday's afternoon I went to the paypond to fly, and I hooked a nice snakehead. A fly rod and a snakehead in the end of the line.... wohoo!!

Berhala Got Fish!!

On the 25 Oct 2011, Bakry, Ismail and I took the opportunity to fish because our school's 'cuti peristiwa'. This is an opportunity to fish because most of the anglers are working right now. We decided to fish around Nunuyan and Berhala Island. Because only the 3 of us, we charted Mr. Kim Sui's boat.

As usual we went to Tinosa to get live prawns as bait and we were lucky that day because we have sufficient live prawns for the whole day.

We started fishing around 7.00 am and that morning was a bit slow, about 1 hour fishing we got nothing, not a single bite!!. So, Kim Sui suggested we drift and we manage to catch small groupers. Then, we went to Nunuyan Island to fish, Bakry got a strong pull and his line reeling out but not for long his rig was clean cut by a mysterious fish. We suspected a barracuda.Later, I got a small trevally and because of no fish biting after that, our Mr. Kim Sui took a nap zzzzzzzzzzzzz hehe. Once he woke up we went tu Berhala Island.

I remembered clearly the time my parents took me fishing in a small creek. I was 8 years old on that time. My mother prepared me a fishing pole using a tree branch and the thing I cannot forget is the hook. The hook was especially made for me from a staple of a box. The 'hook' just like a 5/0 size!!!. No wonder I did not get any fish.
Today, I went fishing with my mom. I prepared her all the fishing gear and as I tied the hook, I smiled to her and said "careful mom this hook is extreamly sharp". I know why she gave me a staple hook when I was a little boy.
My mom's luck was good today, usually I always out numbered her catch, but not this time. We had a good time together :-)

Testing Fiberglass 3WT Fly Rod

. Last Saturday I have the time to test the rod. The night before, heavy rain worries me that the water would be murky and might be not suitable to fly for some barbs.

As I arrived to the fishing area, my worries was true, the water was murky and fast flowing. I tied some scud and nymph especially for the barb. my first cast was a bad one, not familiar with the rod's action. After a few cast I managed to get the rhythm of the slow action rod. I fell in love to this rod completely. I got 3 barbs and a snakehead using nymph fly. Looking foward to use this rod again

On the 16th January 2011 was my first trip with Rodney , Bakry, Adzuandy and Khairi. As for Adzuandy and khairi it was the first time they fish on the boat. We joined Raymond's trip this time. in this trip, there was no big fish caught and despite of that, we enjoy fishing together.

School's Trip to Pulau Bai

Yesterday, my colleagues and some friends went to Pulau Bai. As for me, it is just a regular trip but for the rest of the trip's members were their first time to Pulau Bai. Some of them was their first fishing trip.I organised this trip especially for some newbie in fishing and hopefully they will enjoy fishing as I do. There were 10 of us and we managed to hook a total of 15 kg various species if fish (mostly croaker). The trip was fun and enjoyable.

Yesterday I went fishing and to my surprise I hookup 5 eels. Usually this place is full of barbs fish, but I got new type of fish here :-). All eels were released safely.

Yesterday, Bakry, Bob, Donny, Amiluddin and his friend went fishing in Kretam. The first planning was a trip to Pegasus unfortunately due to some cancellation from some friends, I had to negotiate with the boat owner for a cheaper boat charter to accommodate the six of us. I booked this boat a month before and conformation from the others fishing buddies.

The weather was fine yesterday; we started fishing at 8.15 until 4.30. The boatman's service was excellent and always helping us. Even giving free Apollo rigs for our newbies. We had a good fight yesterday. I got several pull in the end of the line from demersal fish and I could not stop them from reeling out my avet reel even though I set the drag to the maximum. The fishes managed to went in the reef. Not just me even Amiluddin got 4 strikes but his 50lb line snapped.

I think that for the next trip we need to use heavier gear in this fishing spot.

I was jigging for a long time on yesterday's trip using 200g jig. Again I got a strong pull from below and could not stop the fish from taking refuge in the reef. I guess no luck for me then. Looking forward for the next trip.

Pulau Berhala Fishing

After 2 weeks of planning, the trip to Pulau Libaran cancelled due to unavoidable problem. So, I phoned Mr. Lau Kim Sui if he can bring me to fish near Pulau Berhala and he agreed. The weather was fine and the current not too strong. I arrived at the jetty to meet Kim Sui around 6.45 am. Straight away we went to buy live prawns from a local fisherman. The fishing spots that we went were just around Pulau Berhala - only 10 minutes boat ride from the jetty. Fishing today I considered as successful however it would be more fun if my 'Fishing Gang' fishing together. We managed to land a numbers of GTs and groupers.

For the past few days my daughter asked me to bring her to fish, finally today was the day she got her own fish. This fishing trip or I would say a mini fishing trip is for my daughter and her cousins to fish. Their grandmother suggested to fish for barbs and we all headed to the fishing spot. Because this was their first time, there were using pole fishing. Everybody got their own fish to brag about hehe.

Labour's Day Holiday - Recce on Sg Bogel

5.45 A.M : I start my car and after that I fetch Bakry, Randy and Bob at their home. We planned to go to a waterfall to celebrate Labour’s Day’s holiday. The journey took about 3 hours to get there. As we arrived to our destination, without delay we went to pay for the entrance to the waterfall. As we went in we felt demotivated by the condition of the place. The water in the pool was murky and Randy suggested going to another place named Sungai Bogel. It took us another 1 ½ hours to go there.

Finally we arrived at Sungai Bogel. The water is crystal clear and we can see the bottom of the stream. I can see many fish at the swimming in the water even though I’m not wearing my polarized glass. We went for a swim and this is the first time for me to experience pristine water. The surrounding that I could not explain by words.

Bakry and I did not waste the opportunity to fish. I fly fish while Bakry using hard bait. There are many Sebarau in the river, only the small one took our presentation. The bigger one only stayed at the bottom of the river. We were not well prepared as this is a recce .We’ll Be Back!

Rohu Fishing with Rasul

Last weekend I went to Putrajaya to do some errand. While I was there, Rasul entertained me and took me to a fishing pond. We fish about 2 hours and got two nice fish. This is my first experience to fish Rohu. Using a light tackle this fish is strong and easily to give in. I relied on Rasul dough as bait as I don't know anything about mixing dough as bait. The fish we caught we sold back to the fish pond's owner.

Pulau Bai Revisited

On the 15th March my sister and I revisited Pulau Bai. We were accompanied by two anglers ,Ustad Isa and Bob. This trip supposedly a 7 person trip because the fishing boat can accommodate 12 persons but due to some reasons the others cancelled their participation last minute. Being only 4 persons and a boatman in the spacious boat we could fish comfortably without any tangled lines. We started fishing at 7.30am until 3.00pm. It is a bit windy and the sea was a bit rough on that day.

Usually anglers fish in this area will use a good casting rod and a 4000 size reel should be sufficient because the fish here are not big. I used a casting rod and Abu cardinal 304 and underestimated the fish here for not being a good fighter however I was wrong. I got a hook up that managed to reel out my line and at the end due to my carelessness the 20lb braided line exploded. The suspected culprit is a stingray. All in all I had a great time fishing here.

At last, yesterday is one of my successful fishing trip. I planned this fishing trip since a month ago, luckily it is not difficult to find fishing buddies to charter a boat. The boat cost us Rm1650 for a whole day. It is quite expensive but for the sake of our passion money is not a problem. Since a week ago I've checked the weather report and hopefully the weather is with us. The local news said there will be strong wind that worried me. Yesterday, the weather was fine. Lucky for us.

I think this is the first time I was sea sick. Not because of the sea but untangling fishing lines that made me feel a bit dizzy. We encountered a series of tangled fishing line due to the changing current that cost us fishing time to add more 'sad' feeling, it was feeding frenzy on that time.

Personally, this fishing trip is fun for me..friendly friends and good catches too.

My Sister and I first Debut for 2010

It’s been a while since my last trip for sea fishing last year. My plan is to go in this March 13 either Taganak or Kretam for my first sea fishing for this year. When I looked the calendar it would be another 2 weeks to go and suddenly I got an idea. I phoned Rodney to organize a warming up trip near Pulau Bai and Pulau Berhala. Now I got the chance to bring my sister together for sea fishing trip – her first debut and she enjoys the fishing trip.

I brought my 28g jigs and a madai jig for this trip. When we arrived near Pulau Berhala, I set up my jig and started jigging for about half an hour but no fish were hooked. I bottom fish and I hook up an ‘Otek’ @ ikan duri @ a catfish family. It was fun as I was using a light tackle (I haven’t hooked this fish for a couple of year hahaha). The fish was immediately released back to its habitat. We moved from this location because we were ‘attacked’ by this species.

Next, we stopped at the second point, I use the Madai jig, and to my surprise a croaker took the jig. I got 2 croakers using this jig and I thought only grouper will be hook up in this place. Ah Lung next to me hooked up a GT using bait, immediately I changed to the 28g jig, unfortunately I got nothing. Throughout our fishing trip we moved to several fishing spots. As for my sister, she caught lots of croakers, groupers and also bebolos @ whiting. She said that she wanted to target for fish bigger fish next time.

For a price RM23 per person, it can be considered as cheap for a priceless experience for me and my sister and I would recommend to anybody who wanted to try fishing as a hobby for the first time to go to Pulau Berhala and Pulau Bai. Thanks to Rodney for organizing such a joyful trip.

It's been quite sometimes I updated my blog. Being busy and expecting my wife to give birth, I postponed all my fishing activities. I have to turned down my fishing buddies' invitation to their fishing trip( I will be back soon ). Finally on the 9th February my wife gave birth to a baby boy : - ). I spent my time tying flies at home. I tied quit a number of nymphs and it's time to try it. I went to a nearby with my younger sister to fly barb or 'putihan' as identified by local people. My sister use bait and I use nymph. The verdict, Bait = 16 barbs and Nymph = 14 barbs. To our surprise, we did not expect to hook 30 barbs on that evening and I suspected nobody ever fish here before. All the barbs were released back to the stream.

Today Bakry and I went fishing again. I equipped with my wt5 fly rod and bread fly and Bakry used a light tackle using bread as bait.We targeted mullet but the mullet seem to ignore our berley trail. Through our polarized sun glasses, we can see rabbit fish nibbling algae in the bottom and without delay Bakry cast and Yess!! hookup less than 1 minute we arrived. Bait 11 and fly O. Better luck for me next time.

Last night Bakry, Bob and I went fishing and our target fish is Mangrove Jack. This particular fishing spot that we have chosen is near a village, and most of people there said that there are no fish there. When the villager saw us fishing we always got a cynical look and even voices shouting 'Mana ada ikan!!' - 'There're no fish there!!' plus giggles. Sometimes I feel that we're their laughing stock . But little that they know, the best fishing time there is when the tide is 2 meter above. We have experimented this time of fishing. we only got fish if the tide is 2 meter ++.

I met Mr. Goh and Mr.Adrian in Clearwater, both of them fly fishing kakis. Mr. Goh invited me to join them fishing on a boat. I fish for a short period with them because I have to go early. Both of them are really friendly even though we have just met. I'm looking forward to fish with them next year.

Fly vs Lure - Peacock Bass in Clearwater Santuary

I found out that fly fishing is more successful than lure casting in Clearwater Sanctuary. Out of many peacock basses I caught, only one fish took my spinner even though I used a variation of lures. The rest were by fly fishing.

I'm not saying that fly is the best way to fish peacock bass here, I think that the Peacock bass here are not easily tricked by using lure. The fish are getting smarter because of the fishing pressure by the visitors.

Despite of feeling a bit tired because of the long travelling hours, I went fishing on the next day at Clearwater Resort, Batu Gajah, Perak.

Before I custom made my golf rack to golf and rod rack, I've encountered problem on where to put my fishing rods. After spending a lot of money to replace broken rings ( which happen because of misplacing and poor handling of the rods :-( ). I realized that I need to organize my rods in a proper way.. he he to avoid spending money to replace rings which is more expensive than the original price of the rod. Of course this is not the same with the rod rack in the tackle shop but this sure help me to organize my fishing rod at home.

Today is the last day of Raya holiday..Bakry and I went to mullet fishing. Bakry or I could say the king of mullet caught 4 mullets..and I .. I've lost count..because I caught none hehe.. it is a bad day for me but a wonderful day for Bakry.. :-)

Bakry, Rodney and I went fishing again today. Our target species to day is Flower Horn for Bakry's aquarium. We started fishing at 3.30pm until 5.45pm. Today, we were puzzled because not many fish biting our bait..sadly there were signs that the flowerhorn's paradise has been netted.

However, we have landed 2 Tilapias which is not in our target species for that day. The three of us went home with a happy face.

What You Need To Know

Fly Rod

The rod is different from other fishing rod. What we really fimiliar with to an ordinary rod is the poundage or the PE or the rod, but for a fly fishing rod it is catogarised as Weight (Wt) from Wt 0 (lightest) to Wt 12 (heaviest)

Line

The line consist of wt0 to wt12 which need to be matched with the rod. Lines can be floating, sinking, intermediate. these types of lines to suit your need in targetting what types of fish you want to fly.

Flies

The flies are vary. Freshwater and saltwater patterns could be made..the beautiful part is you can make your own flies.

I'm still in the process of learning of the art of flyfishing.. what I write here is not a complete information of fly fishing but the basic things you need to know before starting to become a fly fisherman.

Fasting month is coming soon, daytime fishing at the sea would be treacherous for me. However, this would not stop me to fish hehe. I remembered before I participated actively offshore fishing I used to fish at belakang pasar sandakan with Bob and Bakry. As far as I remember, the best catch for me is the small Ketambak, but for Bob he managed to land several Mangrove Jacks, Groupers and not to mention Gelama. Here are some pictures taken.

Today, Bob, Bakry, Rod, Jason and two new comers Bob kecil and Nik and I went to Sg. Assam. I would say this trip is not as fruitful as before. Due to bad weather condition, strong current and wind, we have to end the trip early.I caught a 2 kilos 7 star and a palm size grouper but I'm not really happy about that because some of my fishing buddy didn't catch anything. I hope in our next trip the new comers will catch a lot of fish.

On the 5/july I went to Bakungan Kecil to fish with my fishing buddy..Rod,Bob,Bakry,Donny,Zizu and Jason. The original plan is to go to Kretam but the boatman brought us to Bakungan Kecil only. As the organizer for that trip, I'm a bit worried if the boat services is 'not up to the standard'. However for a trip of Rm1000 for seven person it is not bad. I think the boatman took us to 5 points only. Before we went for the trip I've heard a lot of rumour about the boatman.

As for me I got to test my new Avet MJL 5.8 with DAM Quick rod to the limit. Satisfied with this reel and I would recomend it to my friends. I also have the chance to test Bob's Tica Team s16 (see .donnysdk.blogspot.com) for the video.

All in all, I got a good size Mangroove Jack and 7 red snappers and 1 Cermin

Yesterday, I'm very excited to fish mullet after a week of work load at my work place. I planned with Bakry the mullet master I would say hehe. That day Bakry's friend Ghazali joined us to fish mullet. Both of them using bread as bait.

As for me, I'm using a bread fly.... try to fool the mullet to take my bread fly..as a result..the mullets are cleaver than I thought. The water condition was bad that day, filled with diesel on the surface. I saw a lot of good size mullets using my polarised sunglass however the mullet won't surface because of the diesel.

Bakry did it again!!! a good size mullet landed..as for the two of us we came home empty handed.

Tackle Set Up For Mullet Fishing

THE HOOK

As I promised ealier, these are the basic set up for mullet fishing. The type hook is the most important element to achieve the desired outcome apart from luck hehe. The right hook will help us to get a solid hook up as mullet is a nibbler eater.

THE LINE

The thinnest is better. This is because mullet can spot your line on the water surface and will not go near to your bait. I use 8 lb test but one must becareful with the wittyness of this fish. One hooked the fish will make a run which might snap your line....will feel like a GT if you use light tackle especially 'rod udang' .

THE BAIT

This is the best part, just ordinary plain bread. However, you need to berley the bread to attract the mullet. Once the fish is in the casting distance, throw you bait. The fish usually hooked up when they are in feeding frenzy.

Today I got MMS from my friend Bakry which trigger my memory about mullet fishing. Many people laughed at us if we told them that we can fish mullet, particularly the yellow tailed mullet. The others always frowned at us but when they saw it can be done, they couldn't believes their eyes.

Mullet fishing is not easy as they seem, one must trial and error. I remembered that it took me several times of fishing trip before I land my first mullet. This credit I must give to My friend Mohd Rasul who shown me how to fish mullet.

Mullet fishing can be addictive. I can remembered almost every evening I went for mullet fishing last year. Using light tackle, 6-8 pounds of line will challange your skills to land the fish. Choosing the right hook is also important in catching it. Once hookup, the mullet will give you one hell of a fight.. the feeling that I can't explain.

Rm 1.80 spoon is what I meant. Today went to cast snakehead with Rodney, Peter and George. At first I us lizard sp, grub and spinnerbait and all these failed me. I remembered my Rm 1.80 spoon and I just cast and slow retrieve and a little bit of jerking. I got haruan and Ikan Ubi.

On the 30th, Bob, Rodney and Jason and I went to Taganak again. The sea was rough that morning but gettinh better on the afternoon. Luckily I ate sea sick pill. In this trip, I would say not really a success because not many fish that we cought. However, I'm still thankful bacause I manage to land my first 4 kilaos 7 star grouper.

Today as usual, went to fly with Rodney and Jason. This time I've made a new and improve fly to defeat the snakehead there. In previous visit I got a lot of strike but no solid hook up. I've hook up 3 snakeheads which makes me proud of my own tied fly. 2 snakeheads were ' realesed' and another one I took home for my aquarium. Rodney landed the biggest snakehead of the day using seahawk froggy. I went home with a satisfied feeling until I realised that I owe Rodney Rm 15 hehe for the froggy I asked him to buy from SS Kota Marine.

This is the Killer fly - Deer hair body, 4 strands of rubber legs from a spinner bait, yellow hackle and a CIRCLE HOOK which ensure a solid hook up.

My next trip with my friends will be on the 30th May - Pesta Kaamatan. We are going to celebrate that day on a fishing boat hehe f. I really can't wait as I counting days waiting for the 30th to come. My friend Cikgu Bob already prepared his weapons and he can't wait to test his new Tica Team multiplier. As for me I will be preparing Apollo rigs hybrid with Tanduk.. hope that to kill 2 birds in one stone or I might say to hook 2 species in one rod and reel. Well, my fishing adventures is not always fruitful, I still remember the first time I went to deep sea fishing, the catch is not something to proud of but the experience is priceless.

Today, I went to fly haruan with Jason and Rodney.A lot of fun fishing with the two of them. This time I used my prototype frog fly to hunt snakehead. Got a lot of strike however only a small haruan got hooked. Feeling satisfy with the frog fly I've made. Next time I will improve with the fly's look.

I just finish tying a prototype frog fly of my own. I would say it is an ugly frog fly hehe. Tomorrow if Rod is free, we will targetting snakehead. If the fishing spot permits me to fly fish I would use this frog fly. If the Snakehead strike my prototype and able to hook up I would consider my prototype is a success and work on the looks of the fly next time.

Sg Tokai actually not the real name of the place.. If i not mistaken it is Sg. Seguntur. Mayong has been there. The place introduced by bro Rasul years back. I think the name given by him. Last year I went casting there with Rasul and Bakry. "Oi! ndak bole memancing di sini!" a security guard running towards us.. so we went further left to fish. In this fishing spot the targetted species are grouper and barracuda and also not to forget 'bedukang'.

On May 8, I went casting with Rod and some future casters + a future fly rodder. The targetted species are snakehead and tarpons. I feel amaze and proud with the new friends I met (Peter, George and Fernandez) eventhough they are young ,their attitude towards fishing is different compared to some anglers. These future casters practice catch and release and aware the need to conserve and stock the fish. Well, different with me when I was a boy.. catch and no release :-(.
